Running a summer raffle

Summer is the busiest fundraising season of the year, which is both the opportunity and the problem: every fête, sports day and village show lands in the same few weeks, and the same families are being asked by several causes at once. Our 43 summer designs are the largest seasonal range we print, and personalising one with your own prizes is what stops your raffle blending into everyone else's.

The summer fête and everything around it

Summer fairs, fêtes and carnivals are the obvious home for these tickets, but the range also covers sports days, village shows, open gardens, summer balls and end-of-season club events. A raffle running alongside an event almost always raises more than the event's own takings.

Because so many events cluster into June and July, the groups that do best are the ones selling for weeks beforehand rather than only from a table on the day. Tickets sold in advance also pull people to the event itself.

Prizes for a summer crowd

Think about what people actually want in July: a garden hamper, a barbecue, outdoor games, a family day out, tickets to a local attraction, or a voucher for somewhere with a beer garden. Donated prizes from local businesses tend to be easiest to secure in summer because footfall is high and they want the visibility.

A headline prize worth talking about is what gets a ticket book opened, but breadth is what empties it. Several mid-range prizes beat one big one and a long gap.

Ordering around the end of term

If your event is at a school, the end of the summer term is an immovable wall. Set the draw for the event itself, then count back through the selling period and the delivery window — standard delivery is free and takes 5 working days, with 3 working day express available.

Weather is the summer risk. Selling most of your tickets before the day means a wet Saturday dents attendance rather than your fundraising total, and a draw can always be done indoors.
